Backpacking around Penang / Part 2

Part 1: http://pforphyllis.blogspot.com/2014/08/backpacking-around-penang-part-1.html

So after sending my friends off at the airport, I took the bus to Queensbay Mall and waited for my dad to pick me up.

The other end of Beach Street, at night.

That brightly lit stall you see on the left sells really good char hor fun :D

I stayed alone at the townhouse that night, and went to the city centre alone the next morning. Pretty awesome to feel independent - for once!

The view from Pearl Hill. Can you make out the sea in the distance? Well it's the same shade of blue as the sky but it's obviously the sea.

....When you're alone, time somehow seems to pass excruciatingly slow. Felt so bored waiting for the bus D:

This was taken from the pedestrian bridge at Penang Road.

Walked all the way from Penang Road to Muntri Street and further on - without a map!! But I did stop to ask someone the way....just to confirm that I was walking in the right direction haha. Felt quite accomplished though. I think I'm more or less familiar with the roads in George Town already :P

Waited at a coffee shop opposite this pretty-looking fire station for my other group of friends. It's at the intersection of Beach Street and Chulia Street Ghaut.

While waiting for my friends (who took sooooo long to arrive from the airport haha), I made the acquaintance of a Chinese girl from Szechuan. It started when she saw me using my phone and wanted to borrow my cable, thinking that we're using the same phone model but turns out that we weren't. After that we chit-chatted for a while, and I found out that she's a fresh graduate and has been in Penang for a week. How nice to travel around before committing yourself to working life...

After she went off, I saw this stall (in the coffee shop) selling beef kuey teow soup and a lot of people seem to be having it. Checked Foursquare and saw some comments saying that it's the best beef kuey teow soup in Penang. It sounded really tempting and I was curious to try it, so I ordered one small bowl. It's a little bit pricey at RM7 with not much beef, but the soup was full of flavour. It's good but I'm just not sure if it's really the best in Penang...? Hahaha.

Finally my friends came and since they don't eat beef, they ordered fried oyster omelette. It's the only choice since the coffee shop only has these two stalls.

We went to Cozy in the Rocket (such a hipster name for a café) for teatime. It's just round the corner from the "Children on Bicycle" mural.

I love the ambience of the place.

But one thing I find it ridiculous is that customers are forced to order one item per person. Is that even legal?!?!??! ....Such a turn off, lol.

So yeah, we ordered lychee and mint juice (do NOT order this unless you really love mint), cempedak creme brulee (nice but too sweet), green tea pound cake with ice-cream (perfect for green tea lovers), and white chocolate & nutmeg mousse (it's okay if you don't mind the taste of nutmeg).

For dinner, we decided to get burgers from the famous burger truck near the food court at Jalan Sungai Kelian (right below Pearl Hill, opposite Copthorne Hotel). The stall usually starts operating around 7pm but that night the truck wasn't there coz the engine had some problems. So we thought of getting Domino's and there was this buy 1 free 1 promotion from 8pm onwards, so we decided to go home first and then call delivery. I already asked the guy at the counter - twice - if the promotion is valid for delivery and he said yes. Long story short, there was a problem with the delivery service and in the end we had to walk all the way down for food -___- SIGH.

Looking on the bright side, it was a nice and leisurely walk at night. I even got the chance to see this amazing view! :)

Waited for a suuuper long time for our food to arrive.

And then when we were walking back, what a surprise - the burger truck was there! So we got burgers for supper :D The burgers are special because of the huge amount of caramelised onions (see that pile over there?), and they are really tasty and cheap too - for a generous portion!

Late-night partying HEHEHE.

Woah first time drinking Somersby cider and I love it!! I prefer pear over apple coz it tastes like it has that extra kick ;)

Like a drunkard HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Our flushed faces.

Pity this girl doing her assignment :P

We wanted to go to Penang Hill early the next morning but it was raining :( So some of us went back to sleep and after the rain stopped, we went to Joo Hooi coffee shop at Penang Road to have these delicious char kuey teow.

And then we took the bus to Balik Pulau for some asam laksa (duh, coz who goes to Balik Pulau without eating its well-known asam laksa).

I'll never get tired of it HAHA. I blogged about it in my previous post here, if you'd like to check it out. By the way, do go during the weekdays if possible because it was a Saturday when I was there again, and I realised that the broth was diluted compared to the other day when I went, which was on a weekday. It's not surprising coz the hawkers have to cater to a bigger crowd, but it's sad that the food lacks its taste and quality in the process.

After that, we had durians for dessert :D There were so many stalls selling durians we didn't know which to choose. In the end, we decided to try a few from different stalls. First we went to this durian stall across the lane from Nan Guang coffee shop, which I really don't recommend coz the durians were more pricey and they didn't taste as creamy as how good durians would taste.

Then we went to another stall that is adjacent to Nan Guang coffee shop. It's not really a stall as there was only a table set up, with a few chairs and a bucket full of durians. The durians are homegrown from the owner's orchard, and the flesh was like the melt-in-your-mouth kind of creamy. SO GOOD! The kind owner even gave us a discounted price, treated us to a special species of durian and also a few rambutans :)

Next, we went to this 3D museum on Weld Quay. I blogged about it before.

I couldn't believe we spent almost three hours in the museum LOL. Sigh, so many hilarious moments with them :')

Spotted this when the bus stopped at a traffic light.

At Batu Feringghi beach! I don't really fancy the beach here as it's too commercialised.

We wanted to go to the night market in Batu Ferringhi but there weren't a lot of food stalls....so we went to the famous Gurney Drive night market instead. My first time here!

I seem to spend every night drinking beer that week LOL (first time so hardcore).

Soon it was the last day in Penang :( We packed our bags, cleaned the house, and went to Queensbay Mall to chill until it was time to depart. After leaving our stuff at the Aeroline office, we had lunch at this nyonya restaurant and later coffee at Espressolab.

Our bus was scheduled to depart at 4:30pm, and we arrived at Sunway Pyramid around 9pm. This was our complimentary "dinner", together with a hot drink. They used to give proper dinner like chicken rice, or rice with dishes, but now....it's obvious they're cutting costs.

Managed to watch two movies, namely Hitchcock (based on Stephen Rebello's non-fiction book Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho; I'm not a fan of Hitchcock but I was curious coz I studied him and Psycho last semester, and surprisingly I liked the film HAHAHAHA) and Turbo

By the way, I only spent about RM300 (free accommodation) for six days in Penang! :)
